HOPE HAVEN PHOTOGRAPHY TO PROVIDE

FREE PORTRAITS FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

The PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA) and Hope Haven Photography has teamed with the Soldiers' Angels volunteer organization to create the PMDA Soldiers' Angels Portraits of Love Project. The goal of the nation-wide Project is to provide 10,000 U.S. soldiers around the world with portraits of their families and loved ones this holiday season, taken by the incredibly talented photographers within our industry. It is Hope Haven Photography to provide over 100 of those portraits. What better way to make our soldiers feel at home than by providing them with a beautifully photographed and printed portrait of the ones they love and miss the most?

The PMDA Soldiers' Angels Portraits of Love Project will help soldiers create their own private world - one in which when they lay down at night, in the barracks, in the tents, or wherever they are, they can gaze upon their loved ones. At a recent PMDA Person of the Year dinner, Sergeant First Class Toby Nunn spoke about the incredible motivation a simple photograph can provide to a solider away from home. We are looking to use the strength and commitment of PMDA member companies to help support this Project and provide the men and women defending our country with a piece of home during these difficult times.

PMDA has designated the months of October, November, and December to set up photo shoots and gather soldiers' families on military bases and in photographer’s studios across the country, including Hope Haven Photography located in Summerville, SC.

The PMDA Soldiers' Angels Portraits of Love Project is the imaging industry's and Hope Haven Photography’s way of giving back with gratitude to the men and women who defend our country each and every day. We wish to thank all of the participating photographers for their enthusiastic support of Portraits of Love.

Are you a garbage truck?

This has to be one of the best emails I have received in a long time because when you sit and think about the meaning, it is so true.

Law of the Garbage Truck

This concerns the reaction of a taxi driver, who, one day experienced a black car which jumped out of a parking space right in front of him. The taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at the taxi driver. He just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

You might wonder why he react that way; that guy had almost ruined the taxi and sent the driver to the hospital!' This is when this taxi driver explained what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck:'Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you..

Don't take it personally!!! Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let

garbage trucks take over their day.

Love the people who treat you right.

Pray for the ones who don't.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!Have a garbage-free day!

I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY

This doesn't come as much of a surprise to most of you, because this is what I do as a profession. However, some of you might not be aware of the love affair I have had with it for most of my life. I was taught as a young girl the value of a photograph, what a treasure it could be, a mystery and a clue to who you were in the world. I have always enjoyed looking at family photos, my grandfather was renowned for his slideshows. My mother has always had drawers full of photographs. As a gift one year, all of us children put them into photo albums for her.

More than a way to record the past. I love the curiosity that comes from being able to capture a moment in time that might have been dismissed in the blink of an eye.

Favorite Place of the Month

Downtown Charleston

There are just so many things to mention here, we have a few minor categories.

Favorite graveyard - St. Phillips - yes I think I have photographed a ghost here. I was shooting a burst on a Canon 40D, which I think is 7 photos per second, and in a middle frame there appears a man standing beside a grave marker, and in prior and aft frames he is not there.

Favorite Place to Hang Out - The Pavilion Bar - best rooftop bar in Charleston, not to mention the live music.

Favorite place to shop - Apple store on King Street...but for non geeks - the market is the obvious stop.

Favorite Place to Photograph - that would have to be the battery area. The trees are amazing, you have the confluence of the two rivers, and a great gazebo. There is also a killer little photograph friendly alley not far away. Perfect for senior photos.

Favorite Seafood - A.W. Shucks - I was so frightened the first time they approached the table and dumped out dinner on the table. LOL

Favorite "NICE" Restaurant would have to be The Peninsula Grill. You have not lived until you have experienced 12 layers of heaven involved in a coconut cake.

Favorite Carriage Tour Company - The Palmetto Carriage Company - great price and free parking aside, these guys are great. This is coming from someone who has been a 'horse person' all my life. They treat their horses very well. They truly know and care for each one.

Favorite Frozen Treat - Great Mountain Yogurt Company - buried over on King Street is this tiny yogurt company. You go in and get as much yogurt as you want and all the toppings you want. You build it yourself (be sure to try the red velvet cake) and pay by the pound. Not cheap but oh! so yummy!

Free tips - do internet searches and create your own walking tour guide map. Its easy to do and a lot of fun, then you have your own map and things to read as you visit each historical site. Be sure to include the public restrooms, they are there, they are just kinda hard to find in an emergency. Also, the carta trolley has as many off and on stops in Charleston that you want. That has to be the best way to see Charleston.

But hands down my favorite thing about downtown Charleston has to be the people. Yes, lots of a tourists, but you can tell who is a local. They have "someplace to go" look about them. Everyone is so nice.

A Beautiful Letter from a Bride

I thought I would share a letter that I received this past summer from a bride. As we enter the wedding planning season for 2012 weddings; I am struck at how few times brides and grooms will ask for my references. The end product is sometimes all they are interested in....which I guess is fine...but I am a nice person too. I just lack the ability to brag about that part....until now. :-) So, read on, just keep in mind that I would never say these things about myself.

Dear Denise,

We just received all of our photos from our wedding and they are absolutely fantastic! The wedding day went by so fast in a blur that we just didn’t’ have time to notice all of the details that came as a result of all our planning and hard work. You and your team captured every element and provided us with a beautiful photo journal of the entire day’s festivities. We are now very excited to print up the photos and fill the walls of our new home together with the memories.

When we set out to find a photographer, it was important to us to find someone with whom we felt comfortable and relaxed and we really wanted our day to be a fun and relaxed celebration with our family and friends . You and your team fit in perfectly with our guests. We even had several of our guests comment on how great the photographers were! Hope Haven Scholarship Winner for 2011 - Justin Simmons

The 2011 scholarship was given to a band student from Cane Bay High School based on good moral character, kindness of heart and financial need.

Justin, as a senior for Cane Bay High School was captain of the band and performed in Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Concert Band. Justin is very active in his church, plays in a christian rock band and will be attending Charleston Southern University (CSU) this fall.

DaQuan Says "When I was young, I was crowned most creative in my school. I love trying to find new ways to express emotions and I love to study how other cultures and societies view life.

I joined the 2010-2011 Cane Bay Cobra Regiment as a Junior and it's left me with only one regret...that I didn't start sooner. I started juggling chorus, band, pep club, dance team and regular everyday life. I found it hard but the warm, inviting people and atmosphere in the band program really kept me going. I am so proud to have earned the brass award for my first year playing a tuba.

As a senior my top goal will be expressing the freedom of expression. I recently scored big on the BEST internship EVER at Hope Haven Photography and it's really inspired me to follow my plans for Graphic Design/Artistic Expression. We saw on their facebook page that they had a free admission day in June. We really really enjoyed our visit there. We took a boat ride. They have lots of boats available and they are very easy to paddle through the swamp lake. You will see lots of flora and fauna and take a step back in time to a place uncluttered by all the electronics that seem to control our lives. So our recommendation is to include a visit to Cypress Gardens every trip to the Low Country.

Aurora Alert for my Northern Friends

An event on the Sun occurred on the 7th of June. Prompt arrival of high speed particles has already affected the atmosphere. Our model indicates that the shock wave will reach Earth on the 8th of June around 5pm GMT. This will be followed by a disturbance in the solar wind that should produce fairly extensive auroral displays within 24 hr after that time.

For the Northern Hemisphere, the aurora should be visible mainly in North America, since the sun is illuminating most of the auroral zone in Russia and Scandinavia. If the timing is right, the disturbance will lead to auroras visible from the Northern US on the night of the 8th.

Antarctica will see the display even beginning with the shock arrival on the 8th. For Tasmania and Southern New Zealand it will be the 9th.

It is difficult to predict what the K index will be during night of the 8th in North America, but it is reasonable to expect K=6 which would put the aurora over Milwaukee, and visible on the northern horizon on a line from Portland Ore, southern Nebraska, southern Indiana, to Washington, DC.

Go to the auroral forecast page at: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast

and watch the Short Term (1 hr) forecast. It will increase when the arrival of the disturbance is one hour away. It will also show you whether you can see the aurora from your vantage point, if you choose the map that shows your location.

If you are north of 55 deg latitude, it may be too light to see the aurora at night. Let us know of your success or failure and we will amend the section on the auroral forecast page called "Viewing the aurora in the Northern Summer".

Cane Bay 2011 Hope Haven Award

Denise wanted to be here yet instead she is resting after surgery today.

This scholarship is continuing a tradition began in 2007 in Seattle Washington.

Each year we give a percentage of our profit to a senior in a creative program in our local high school.

This year we chose to honor a band student, next year it will be open to all fine arts.

As a requirement of the award the student must be recognized by his director as well as school administration for leadership, having good moral character a kind heart and financial need.

While there are actually several seniors who fit this classification, it was a difficult choice.

The recipient of 2011 HOPE HAVEN Photography scholarship for $250 is

Continuing a tradition we began in Seattle, we are getting to award a graduating senior with a small scholarship to help with books, ect. This scholarship does not mean the recipient must take part in photography, just higher education.

Steven will be presenting the award tomorrow night at the Cane Bay High School's Senior award night.

Our scholarship award is based on Leadership, Good Moral Character, a Kind Heart and Financial need. There were actually several students who fit this criteria.

So the graduating senior from Cane Bay High School Band who will receive this award is..... Stay tuned.

“Outside England’s Bristol Zoo, there is a parking lot for 150 cars and eight buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant. The fees were $1.40 for cars, $7 for buses.

Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day or work, the attendant just didn’t show up; so the zoo management called the city council and asked it to send them another parking agent. The council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the zoo’s responsibility. The zoo advised the council that the attendant was a city employee.

The city council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the city payroll. Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France or Italy is a man who’d apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep parking fees, estimated at about $560 per day -– for 25 years.

Assuming seven days a week for collections, this amounts to just over $7 million, and no one even knows his name.”
