Maternity Photography

The Optimal time for maternity photography is between 30 and 36 weeks. If you miss this stage it’s gone forever. Before the magic becomes a memory.

A popular question is ‘Do we use natural light?’ Professional studio lighting is used a great deal in my work. However; we will use natural light to our best advantage. When we set up in the comfort and privacy of your home, studio lighting not only removes the unpredictable nature of the weather & natural light, it affords me the opportunity to spend more time with my clients, helping each woman accentuate her natural movements and expressions, imparting her own unique personality and emotion on each photograph. From a visual standpoint, I expertly controls the shadows and highlights within each maternity photographs to create visually stunning silhouettes of unmatched tonal range and beauty, elevating the unique lines of each pregnant woman’s body into an intimately timeless work of photographic art.

After your shoot, I will choose a selection of the best images from each session to go through a detailed editing process. Chosen from many hundreds of raw photographs, the selected pictures will be custom cropped to enhance composition, expertly adjusted for tonal range and completely edited to ensure flawless presentation. This time intensive (and far too often neglected) process, is just part of what separates Hope Haven Photography’s maternity photographs from other photographers work and enables our prints to be rightfully called, Fine Art.

Many of the most famous, renowned and accomplished photographers in the world today have enthusiastically embraced digital photography for its exceptional image quality, archival characteristics and nearly limitless creative flexibility. Professional level equipment and state of the art editing techniques enable a new breed of maternity photographer to stand on the shoulders of yesterday’s finest film photographers to create unique photographs that quite simply could only have be imagined just a few short years ago.

Custom printed on the finest quality cotton fiber papers from White House Custom Colour. Our Fine Art Maternity Prints exhibit a tonal depth and sheer beauty that must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Archival quality pigment inks are used exclusively to ensure you’re photos will last for generations. In fact, when properly displayed or stored, these amazing prints will last for well over 150 years!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

"If we select your studio, will you be the photographer covering our wedding?"
Yes, Denise Lee is our primary photographer with Steven Lee, her husband, providing 2nd photographer and backup support.

“We're having a small wedding, with thirty people, and only wanted to spend $1,000 on pictures. What can we do?"
The first thing to do if you want a professional photographer under these circumstances is to be flexible. We have many budget friendly packages that can fit almost any budget. We also make payment arrangements. Most photographers ask for a 50% deposit to hold the date, we also offer monthly payments – even payments after the wedding.

How much time will the photographer spend at my wedding?
That is really up to you. You can us meet you where you are getting dressed, and keep taking pictures until you leave the reception. Or you may just want a few hours of photography, with a few formal photographs and some pictures of the ceremony. (If you choose a high quality professional, the price difference between short and full coverage will be small.) My typical coverage starts two or three hours before the ceremony and ends after the bouquet, garter and cake.

What are proofs?
Fifty years ago, photographers presented clients with proof pictures printed on special paper; images would last for a few weeks and then fade. We do online proofing to give you the opportunity to request any custom changes, such as black and white, sepia or directed cropping.

What about getting an album?
We offer "Packages," each package having a set number of hours, images, and certain number of final pictures in an album. It might be better to get a package that includes an album that the photographer will assemble completely, because most of us never get around to putting our pictures in albums if we have to do it ourselves. Consider ordering parents' albums too. If your parents vision is less than perfect, they would really appreciate getting an album with large photographs so that the faces are easy to see!

Who chooses the pictures that go in the album?
After looking at all the proofs, the bride and groom usually decide what goes in the album. The photographer may let you specify the sequence and size of the pictures, so that the album really shows the wedding the way you want to see it, with important images enlarged, and related candid’s grouped together. We will suggest a layout for your album or design the album with you, using proofs or computer images to show you what the final album will look like. You will benefit from the photographer's eye and feel for the wedding.

What about black and white photography?
We will fully customize any photograph to your specification. All images are shot in color; however using digital negatives allows us to change the image to any color tone desired.

Where can I have my photos printed?
You can print photos at any digital lab. While you can acquire low cost prints at many outlets such as Wal-Mart or Costco, the quality might not be as comparable as a high quality wedding print you would expect from a top quality printer. I recommend an online solution of www.mpix.com as a very cost effective and high quality print.

My mom likes soft focus pictures, but I want sharp photos?
Except for mood shots and some portraits, pictures should be sharp. You should be able to count the threads in the veil. But a soft filter can be flattering in a close-up photo. A soft filter can soften other unwanted details that are not important to the photo.

What's this "wedding photojournalism" that my friends are talking about?
There are many stories and vignettes at a wedding: Bride getting ready, ring bearer being coaxed to walk up the aisle, the bride's mother watching the father-daughter dance. Moments like these, when photographed without posing, are Wedding Photojournalism

But capturing moments does not tell the bigger stories: Relationships and Fantasy. A posed loving photograph of the bride and her grandmother captures the relationship, and this is a photo that will have meaning for generations. The bride and groom in an idyllic setting has that fantasy quality that some couples want as part of their wedding memories.
Anybody with a camera can take a formal photograph or a photojournalistic photograph. A good traditional photographer captures genuine expressions of relationships, and makes everyone look their best. A good pictorial photographer creates your fantasy images, believable fantasy images! A good photojournalist captures decisive moments to tell a story. We do all three!

I just hate posed pictures - I always look so stiff and unnatural in them.
I know what you mean. I had posed pictures of me taken for my high-school yearbook. I still cringe when I think about how awful they were. However, the person behind the camera was probably given minimal training and had no real interest in photography.

What sort of balance between posed shots and candids should I get?
This is also a matter of taste, combined with necessity. Great wedding photography can be done with no formal posed pictures at all (wedding photo journalism). But, there may be many people and combinations of guests that will never be captured unless the photographer deliberately gathers them in one spot for a picture. (Whether the picture looks posed or natural depends on the photographer.) When planning with your photographer, draw up a list of "must get" photos, such as college roommates, kids from your old neighborhood, a four generation picture, and so on. If you want a large catalog of specified pictures, then expect your photographer to spend more time doing those, and less time doing candids and wedding photojournalism.

Should we do the formals before or after the ceremony?
Some couples think it is bad luck to see each other before the ceremony. If following this tradition is important to you, all of the photos of the bride and groom together will be done afterwards, but solo shots can be done before. However, getting all the formals done at the beginning has several advantages: Flowers, clothing and make-up are fresh, and you can carefully budget time for formals. (And, if your ceremony ends after dark, the only time for natural light pictures of the two of you will be before the ceremony!) Couples who feel formal photos are important will set aside one, two, or even three hours for formals, which finish up about half an hour before the ceremony begins. If you do formals immediately after the ceremony, guests have to wait before they can greet you, and members of the bridal party will have pose for pictures rather than mingle. About half of the weddings I photograph have all the formals taken before the ceremony. Sometimes the bride and groom are not sure of what their preference is until just weeks before the wedding.

What can I do to keep the photographer from running my wedding day?
It is essential that you talk with your photographer in that last week before your wedding. Go over your time line for the day. Find out how long the photographs you have requested are going to take; If it is too long, cut out some of the posed pictures. If you have dozens of posed shots on your photo list, expect your photographer to be persistent in getting them. Or tell your photographer the way you have scheduled the day, and that he/she is to follow your schedule. A posed photo of cutting the cake takes ten seconds, and the rest of the cake shots should be candid.

What about having two photographers?
For select dates we offer two-photographer coverage - where both professionals are taking pictures. One concentrates on the formals, the other on wedding photo journalism.

Some photographers ask that no one else take pictures during the formal photography. Is that reasonable?
Yes. If the photographer is trying to work quickly through a series of formal pictures, a snap-shooter might slow the process. A problem arises when there are several cameras aimed at a formal group - the subjects will be looking at different lenses. The diverted attention will ruin the professional's picture. Or, if the professional is using a light-sensing trigger device ("slave") on a second flash, other flashes will trigger this flash, ruining the pictures [that you are paying for] and wasting battery power. There are many other reasons why a professional might ask others to refrain from picture taking during formals. On the other hand, many guests find snapping a few pictures a pleasant part of attending weddings, so it should not be a big deal for your professional to be relaxed and let people snap away when formals are over. Ideally, guests should show respect for the bridal party and photographer and put down their cameras during the formal photos.

What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, checks, Master Card, Visa and Paypal as payment for services.
100% paid in full at the time you place your order for prints and/or framing.
100% satisfaction is guaranteed or your money is refunded.

How do I know that you will actually arrive?
I am under contract to fulfill the requirements of the agreement. I also have a backup photographer that can perform my duties in the event of an emergency.

What if the event is cancelled?
All deposits are non-refundable. If you event is cancelled and you notified Hope Haven Photography within 30 days of the event, you will not be responsible for the entire amount.

Do you have a payment plan?
Yes, we can accept payments on the deposit and upon the payment of the remainder. However, in order for the event photography to take place, the entire deposit must be paid. And in order for you to receive, view or proof you photos, the remainder of the balance must be paid.

Always live life to it's fullest

Don’t let go of hope.
Hope gives you the strength to keep going
When you feel like giving up.
Don’t ever quit believing in yourself.
As long as you believe you can,

you will have a reason for trying.
Don’t let anyone hold your happiness in their hands;
hold it in yours, so it will always be within your reach.
Don’t measure success or failure by material wealth,
but by how you feel;

our feelings determine the richness of our lives.
Don’t let

bad

moments overcome you;
be patient, and they will pass.
Don’t hesitate to reach out for help;
we all need it from time to time.
Don’t run away from love but towards love,
because it is our deepest joy.
Don’t wait for what you want to come to you.
Go after it with all that you are,
knowing that life will meet you halfway.
Don’t feel like you’ve lost
when plans and dreams fall short of your hopes.
Anytime you learn something new
about yourself or about life,
you have progressed.
Don’t do anything that takes away
from your self-respect.
Feeling good about yourself
is essential to feeling good about life.
Don’t ever forget how to laugh
or be too proud to cry.
It is by doing both that we live life to it’s fullest.

The story about the tiny frogs....

Life's lesson No. 1

Their once was a bunch of tiny frogs who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower.
A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants...The race began...

Honestly:
No one in crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower.
You heard statements such as: "Oh, WAY too difficult!!"
They will NEVER make it to the top." or: "Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high!"
The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one...
...Except for those who in a fresh tempo were climbing higher and higher...The crowd continued to yell "It is too difficult!!!
No one will make it!" More tiny frogs got tired and gave up...

...But ONE continued higher and higher and higher...
This one wouldn't give up! At the end everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who after a big effort was the only one who reached the top!

THEN
All of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it?
A contestant asked the tiny frog how the one who succeeded had found the strength to reach the goal?
It turned out...
That the winner was DEAF!!!!
The wisdom of this story is:
Never listen to other people's tendencies to be negative or pessimistic... ...cause they take your most wonderful dreams and wishes away from you. The ones you have in your heart!
Always think of the power words have. Because everything you hear and read will affect your actions! Therefore: ALWAYS be... POSITIVE!
And above all: Be DEAF when people tell YOU that YOU can not fulfill YOUR dreams!
Always think:
I can do this!

A very nice note from Stan and Lydia

"We just want to thank you again for being amazing to work with on our special day! The pictures are simply amazing!"

My favorite venues?

I sometimes don't think this is a fair question because my favorite or not favorite can be completely based on the weather conditions that favor photography and nothing to do with the locations. So keeping that in mind, here are my top 10 favorite venues.

#1 - Under any white tent. Can you say "huge diffuser"? Now I know most of you might not know what that is, but photographers will go to a great deal of trouble to get nice diffused light, and if you provide it by using a large white tent, then yeah, we get a huge diffuser and we will use it happily!!

Ok into the actual venues; with no particular order. :-)

Lakeside Event Center, Waterways Cruises in Seattle

Rays Boathouse in Seattle

Countryside Meadows in Arlington

Courtyard Hall in Bothell

Belle Chapel in Snohomish

Olson Mansion in Maple Valley

Shuksan Golf Club in Bellingham

Tibbetts Creek Manor in Issaquah

Forest Park in Everett
Edmonds Yacht Club in (obviously :-) Edmonds

Why no one else can photograph during the formal sessions?

I have a rule, or a very strong request during the photography of the formal poses. No one can shoot, except me.

Very often at weddings while I am making formal portrait photographs of groups of people, their friends or family want to stand next to me to try and get the same photo I am taking. This is not allowed for several reasons.

First, I am usually on a tight schedule as these photos are often taken just before the wedding ceremony is scheduled to begin and it is hard to stop and explain why I do not want them around with their cameras.

Some people have told me they think it is because I am afraid of losing revenue from print sales or that I am feeling jealous. It is not that. However, I did study with masters to be able to pose the groups in a certain way and achieve a brandable look for our company. It would be considered stealing to photograph someone elses work of art and that is what I consider our formals to be.

We often also use studio lights for formals, other flashes will interfere with these lights.

However the number 1 reason is I want everyone in my photo to be looking in the same direction. I illustrate this below.

Special Request

I was asked this week what my all time favorite photograph was...and answering honestly, I said the name of the photographer. The person asking the question was surprised that I didn't name one of my photographs. So in answer to the question, all time favorite photographs is by John McColgan.

My all time favorite photograph of my own is: a shot of my daughter and her horse. This was taken with a Kodak DX6490; so please those of you aspiring photographers, it's not the camera that makes the shot. However this shot is important to me in that it began my career. It was this shot that other parents saw at this horse show and asked me to shoot photos of their children as well. That led into my full time career and allowed me to follow my love of photography. Today I am working so that someday my daughter will be able to live her dream of international competition. P.S. She was only 9 when this photo was taken.

Latest Wedding

I have fallen woefully behind in my blogging. All I can say in my defense is that I am not falling behind in my photo production for all our weddings. We are on time in all our deliveries and cranking right along as promised!

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the last few weddings. One is from Ray's Boathouse in Seattle, and the other is from the Lakeside in Seattle. Both made for beautiful weddings. But, nothing beats the staff at Lakeside! Enjoy!

Wedding Albums

Some of you might know that we use Graphistudio exclusively for our coffee table type Albums. What you might not know is that they are from Italy.

After sampling so many albums in the US, we turned to an international supplier to offer us the quality and cost effectiveness that we were looking for.

To see all the options that graphistudio has to offer please check out this link: http://www.graphistudio.com/usa/products/Book/index.html

With our extra's packages you get:
And 8x10 coffee table ablum, with 20 pages
Plus 2 parents albums
The Perfect Package and Lifetime Package add additional pocket book copies.

You might notice that we only increase our prices marginally to add these wonderful books, when other photographers charge a lot for albums. We feel that these albums are an important part of a wedding package. It is my hope that more and more brides and grooms will opt for the album package with the knowledge that these books will last a lifetime.

ENJOY!

PS - Book delivery is a big deal for us here, with wine and cheese and lots of fun!

Stolen Photographs

I guess we have all done it from time to time. You know... see a great photo on the web and save it to your computer for a screen saver or desktop photo. But I never thought someone would blatantly steal from me through the use of specialized software that takes a photo off a secured server and then use it in a training seminar. This is a very very stupid thing to do. Especially if you work for a large employer in the area that would be very easy to sue.

So, in response to this violation I have removed certain sections of our photo tour. My apologies to those of you interested in seeing what we were up to on our trip.

And to the person who stole the photos,... Shame on you.

Photo Tour Day 1

We are on a photo tour. But before I tell you all the great things that we will be up to, I want to give a big T H A N K Y O U to the family that is taking care of our home while we are gone.

The first leg of our photo tour takes us by plane to Atlanta and then onto Buffalo, NY. Tomorrow we anticipate seeing some of Frank Lloyd Wrights homes and touring the beautiful area of the Niagra River. Tomorrow evening we will see the 4th of July fireworks over the Niagra falls (8TH largest display in the world) and enjoy some buffalo wings. Did you know that buffalo wings originated in Buffalo? I didn’t either until I started researching this photo tour.

So what is a photo tour and how does it differ from a normal vacation? The goal of a photo tour is just that, to take photographs. I sell them on the internet through some stock sites or my own. I will be meeting with fellow photographers and wandering the beautiful area north of Toronto. So while we will be hitting the well known touristy places, we will also be taking time to chase down those out of the way locations that are hidden gems.

Some of you have asked how I can take a trip during the summer high demand wedding month. All I can say is planning and a dedication to make it happen. I am happy to report that all pending wedding items and portrait appointments were handled prior to my leaving.

I continue to be in awe of the people we were with at the wedding this last Saturday. I suffered from heat stroke at the wedding. This is a scary and unfortunate experience and one that I do not care to ever repeat. Losing consciousness at a weddng is never anything that I want to crow about but let me tell you about our team. There were 3 all together in the crew, including myself They never missed a beat The first episode came on during formals prior to the ceremony. I simply handed the camera off to my partner and he continued shooting. During the ceremony we still had three digital still camera angles as well as two video angles and even with my second episode taking place during the ceremony; they didn’t miss a shot. I am very proud and thankful for the crew I work with. So if you are reading this and thinking about who to book for your wedding; ask them what plans they have in place for emergencies such as this one. We had a plan in place and without much discussion we were able to implement the emergency plan and get me the relief that I so desperately needed. The icing on the cake was the way-cool wedding party, especially the bride and groom. For all the weddings that I have shot, these were the perfect people to take such a thing in stride. I wish them all the best and I am sure we will see much of each other in the future.

Another absolutely beautiful wedding

Set on the shores of Grapeview, Washington a beautiful wedding took place between Jed and Maggie. One of the most picturesque locations we have shot to date.
To Jed and Maggie, we definently wanted to acknowledge the beautiful event and say thank you for choosing us to photograph and videotape your wedding.

Having Fun

I am human, I have a tendendancy to forget that I fell in love with photography as a young teen. I forget that not all shots are for making other people's memories last forever. One of my goals this summer is to shoot more photography for me, things that make make smile. So here is a sample of the types of shots that make me fall in love with photography all over again.
